As automation continues to emerge in libraries worldwide, many libraries are converting their collection from barcode to RFID technology by implementing RFID tags into their collection.
mk provides their customers with top-of-the-line RFID conversion systems which include RFID tags, mobile conversion stations equipped with a PC, tag dispenser, barcode scanner, RFID reader/antenna, and conversion software. They also offer an option for the library to outsource the entire conversion project in order to allow library staff to provide consistent patron service. During the conversion, a team of professionals work with the provided mk equipment to convert the library’s collection. The entire process is overseen by a project manager who is present in the library from start to finish.
In October of 2011, we began one of our largest projects at a university library in Germany. In order to convert the library’s 1.3 million item collection, a team of 60 students were trained on the process of converting the materials from barcode to RFID and separated into four different branches. The conversion has an anticipated end date of late May. mk will then provide RFID equipment, including self service, security gates, return and sorting systems.
We also converted 70.000 materials at the University of Saarbrücken in January 2012 and successfully completed the project in May.
By late March, mk contracted with the University of Kassel whose collection size consists of 1.8 million library materials and is expected to be completed by October. This project required a significant amount of attention with having the eight different branches spread throughout the city. The project manager of mk continues to stay close in contact with all library managers.
